Jar Clouds

As part of our Stage 2 Science unit on Water last year, my class conducted this Jar Cloud experiment to demonstrate precipitation in the Water Cycle. It was also linked to our English Procedural writing task for that term as well.

What You Need:

  • Shaving cream
  • Glass jar
  • Water
  • Coloured food dye

Method:

  1. Fill the jar 3/4 full of water (atmosphere)
  2. Squirt shaving cream on top (cloud)
  3. Drop food dye droplets on top of the shaving foam
  4. Watch the dye leak through the foam and into the water.

Butterfly Lifecycle

To create these (delicious!) butterflies, simple chose a desirable template from google images:

I selected this one and copied it onto cardboard. Students coloured and decorated their butterfly and I poked holes in them for the lollipop.

Soda - Sugar Content (Float and Sink)

This was a very interesting experiment conducted in my Year 2 Science class.

Hypothesis: Why do some cans sink while others float?

Materials:
- Four different soda cans - two being diet. All being equal size and volume.
- One large transparent container
- Water

Method:
1. Fill the container with water
2. Place a regular soda can in the water
3. Observe and discuss
4. Place a diet can in the water
5. Observe and discuss
6. Repeat with other two cans

Findings:
The sugar content in a regular can on soft drink is higher than that of a diet can, therefore leading to differing densities. The regular soda cans will sink whilst the diet cans will float.

Sugar was shown to demonstrate the sugar content in the soda can.

Solid, Liquid, Gas Assignment

My Year 2 students had a science task - to research and conduct an experiment using one of the three forms of water: solid, liquid or gas.

They had to present their findings on a poster and prepare a speech for their classmates. Some even opted to conduct the experiment for their peers!

Here are some samples of the posters that were created:

And here is one of the experiments conducted by a student:

Materials:

1. Sprite
2. Plastic cup
3. Sultanas

Steps:

1. Fill the cup with Sprite
2. Drop some sultanas into the liquid
3. Watch the sultanas bob up and down in the liquid.

Spiders

Make these scary hanging spiders by cutting up egg cartons, painting their bodies, gluing on googly eyes, poking through pipe cleaners for legs, and hanging from string.

Japanese Theme Ideas

Here is a range of visual art ideas for integrated Science/HSIE Japanese unit with Stage 1 students:

Hand-held fans:

Ikebana straw paintings:

Kimono kids paintings:

Zen gardens:

Lantern paintings:

Calligraphy:

 Kimono dolls:

Kabuki Masks:

 Fish lanterns:

 Volcanoes:

Bubbles Paintings

Kindy had a great time making paintings out of coloured bubbles.

We made bubble solution using water and detergent, and added food colouring.
The children then used a straw to blow bubbles from the solution and placed their paper over the top to create a bubble pattern on it.

How to Make a Rock Float

How can I make a rock float?

This was a question I posed to my students and here is the answer proposed by one of them:

1. Half fill a container with water.

2. Place the rock in a second, smaller container.

3. Place the smaller container with the rock into the larger container with water.

The rock floats!

Hanging Butterflies

Subject:     Science
Unit:          Life Cycles
Grade:       2

How to Make

1. Bend a pipe cleaner in half and curl the ends to make the antennae.

2. Thread beads onto the pipe cleaner from the base, to form the body.

3.  Bend two more pipe cleaners as shown in the image to make the wings.

4. Attach the wings to the body of the butterfly.

5. Attach fishing line to the antennae and hang from a window.

Ice Blocks

Yum! Kindergarten made ice blocks from cordial for our 'Exploring Water' unit!
The kids loved mixing the two liquids, freezing them and eating them.

Bubble Blowers

Using pipecleaners, my students created some interesting bubble blowers for our 'Investigating Water' unit:

Symmetry

Using 3D puff paint, my students created these symmetrical butterflies for their life cycle unit:

Step 1: Fold cardboard and squeeze paint onto one side.

Step 2: Fold cardboard and spread paint outwards.

Step 3: Open, wait to dry. Cut out shapes and display!

Butterfly Bookmarks

This was such a simple activity for my youngsters to complete when undertaking our unit on Minibeasts. We created these butterfly bookmarks using beads, wire and butterflies purchased at the $2 shop.
