When I Grow Up

Each student was asked to write about what they wanted to be when they grew up as part of our HSIE unit on 'Change Over Time'. They dressed in character and presented a speech to the class. We also role-played and I video-taped it as part of our assembly item.

Here is our wall display of "When I Grow Up I Want To Be...."

Calligraphy

The following are some images of my Year 2 students practicing their calligraphy skills using paint and brushes as part of our cultural unit on Japan:

Photo Frames

We have been studying "Workers in the Community" as our HSIE topic this term, and performed a cute item at assembly on "What I Want to be When I Grow Up".

The kids dressed up in their chosen profession and I took photos for a class slideshow.

But I wanted to send home a keepsake with each student, and so we made these cute photo frames using paddlepop sticks and stick-on rhinestone gems:

Fish Lanterns

To make these Japanese fish lanterns, I provided my Year 1 students with the following template:

Students coloured the fish scales using oil pastels, and then glued crepe paper strips to the base.

Aboriginal Art

My Prep class loved listening to Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and creating artworks inspired by the stories.

The Rainbow serpents were made by painting a plate and cutting it into a spiral.

The boomerangs were cut from a template and students used coloured match sticks to create patterns on them.

Tiddalik

Tiddalik the Frog is an excellent story to use when learning about water conservation. It is also a great Dreamtime story to read to students when teaching them about Aboriginal culture.

There are a couple of different versions, and you can watch one of them here on youtube:

A fun activity Kindergarten undertook after learning about Tiddalik, was this craft activity:

Students were provided a frog template photocopied on green cardboard (I found this one in a google search). Then, using a single hole puncher, they punched holes around the outline of the frog. Afterwards, students weaved colourful string in and out of the holes. To add further decoration, they threaded beads onto the string.

Venn Diagram

This was a prepared Venn introductory activity for Year 1 children. This activity was part of our Japanese unit of work, and we compared the city and country life using pictures from the internet. Students pasted these images and their labels onto cardboard circle cutouts before displaying in the classroom.

I have previously blogged here using hoops to make a Venn diagram.

Foamies Friends

These foam magnets brighten up any fridge or classroom whiteboard!

I purchased the foam templates from a craft shop and my students created these foam children as part of our "People in the Community" HSIE unit of work.

We affixed sticky-back magnet tape on the back so they would stick to chalkboards and whiteboards for classroom display.

Beautiful Butterfly Rubs

To make these effective butterfly artworks, I first googled a blank butterfly template (  <  see example ), which I then reproduced and laminated for each student. The kids then traced around their butterflies using oil pastels. They overlapped multiple butterflies and then smudged the outside of each butterfly to create this unique effect.
