Symmetry

Using 3D puff paint, my students created these symmetrical butterflies for their life cycle unit:

Step 1: Fold cardboard and squeeze paint onto one side.

Step 2: Fold cardboard and spread paint outwards.

Step 3: Open, wait to dry. Cut out shapes and display!

Clock

Copy onto coloured paper, laminate and display around the classroom clock.
My students have found this to be a very useful visual aid in helping them tell the time.

Numbers Colouring-In Poster

I purchased these black and white number templates on TpT to help create this worksheet for Kindergarten students. The coloured display letters and numbers can be used to make beautiful classroom displays as well.

What's the Time Mr Wolf?

This modified game involves students actually changing the time on a clock when they are creeping up towards the wolf. It helps strengthen their clock-reading skills whilst playing a familiar game.

3D Shape Models

Using toothpicks and raspberry lollies, my Year 2 students were about to discover the concepts of edges, vertices and faces when exploring 3D shapes recently.

All you need is the following:

To make 3D shapes......

Or even 2D shapes.......

ICT Maths Resources

Click on the following links to visit some of my favourite web tools and mathematical instructional videos:

Khan Academy lets you watch, practice and learn anything for free.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a library of uniquely interactive manipulatives for mathematical instruction.

Splat Square is an interactive hundreds chart that allows you the splat a variety of colours on the numbers.

Chance

To play this mathematical CHANCE game:

  • Roll a dice 40 times.
  • Each time you roll, colour a box of the number you rolled.
  • Start from the bottom up, so it looks like a column graph.

Pose questions such as:

  1. What is the chance of rolling a '2' on the next throw?
  2. How many '3's did you roll?
  3. Why is your answer different to the group next to you?

Trading Game: Place Value

The Trading Game is a fabulous way to teach place value to younger students.

Rolling a dice, students add ones blocks to the units column of the Trading House, and then swap them for a 10 block when they reach it. Two dice can be used to accelerate the pace of the game, and it's a lot of fun when students play in pairs, competing.

Maths: 3D Shapes Drawing

After studying 3D Shapes in maths, we practised drawing them on grid paper. Students then used their sketching skills to draw and overlap shapes and shade them using charcoal.

Maths Money Bingo

Here are some bingo boards I made for maths class to strengthen money concepts.

With the younger years I use it for notes and coins recognition, and with older students I use it for calculating problems (ie. "I bought 5 pens at $2 each. How much did I spend?").
The kids particulary enjoy conducting the game, and formulating the problems themselves.

M & M Maths

M & Ms, Smarties, Jelly Beans..... all delicious, and also lots of fun to use in math lessons. Initially I used candy for sharing and dividing activities, but they are brilliant for data and graphing activities too.

I have blogged previously about Jelly Bean maths here.
Here is a sample worksheet for Early Stage 1, that is easily modified for older students.

Colour Monkeys

Dominie sells these cute colour display monkeys. (I had to make new labels because the spelling was American-ised)

Patterns Display: Mosaics

This is another great fine motor activity for primary students: mosaics.

Students paste coloured squares on top of a black and white template. This can be a great craft activity integrated into Maths lessons when working on patterns.

I laminated these ones as they were displayed on an outdoor wall.

Money Spelling

Easily integrate maths and literacy with this fun money spelling activity. For either an in-class, extension or homework activity, students calculate how much a word is worth.

Each child is given the same template (see below) from which to base their calculations.

To introduce the activity, have the students practice calculating how much their name is worth. Here's a sample template to record the sums:

For a spelling practice activity, students can then calculate how much each word is worth.

Maths Posters

Some Addition and Subtraction posters for classroom display!

Letter and Number Identification

The following are some ideas/samples of letter and number identification artwork my Kindergarteners completed a couple of years ago (we used Spalding font):

The first uses coloured matchsticks to create the neck of a giraffe for the Number One.

For the Number Two, students smeared glitter and glue around the number in this swan template.

The Number Three bird was patterned with stars.

We used mosaic tiles to create the letter 'C':

For the letter 'O', we pasted stickers onto the template.

Place Value

This is a basic resource I made for teaching Place Value during mathematics. I whip it out when using MAB blocks to teach concepts. It can be modified to include hundred and thousands quite easily.

In action during whole group instruction:
