3D Shape Models

Using toothpicks and raspberry lollies, my Year 2 students were about to discover the concepts of edges, vertices and faces when exploring 3D shapes recently.

Floating and Sinking Eggs

This science experiment shows us how to make an egg float!

What you need:

• Two cups
• Water
• Salt
• Two eggs
• Teaspoon

Method:

1. Fill the cups with water.
2. Add 5 teaspoons of salt to one cup only.
3. Place an egg in each cup.

The egg will sink in the plain water, and float in the salty water, due to the increased density.

1. Place a mandarin in a bowl of water. Watch it float.
2. Peel the mandarin.
3. Place the peeled mandarin in the bowl of water.
4. Hypothesize why the peeled mandarin sank.
